Everything in this toolkit has been selected based on either personal use or thorough research. We live in Hua Hin, Thailand, where Amazon doesn’t deliver most products (or shipping costs are prohibitive for small items) – so where we use something ourselves you’ll find our local source noted alongside the Amazon link for international readers. For products we haven’t personally handled, we’ve chosen based on extensive review research and hands-on experience with equivalent products. We’ll always tell you which is which.
This toolkit summarises our product recommendations for natural mosquito control. For the full guide including how and why each solution works, visit our Natural Mosquito Control Guide
Drain & Water Management
1. Silicone Drain Cover What it does: Blocks drain access between uses, preventing mosquitoes from laying eggs in standing water within drain pipes and eliminating odours. Why we recommend it: We use a silicone drain cover like this one – particularly useful for outdoor drains and bathrooms not used daily. For regularly used showers the benefit is more about odour than mosquito control. Amazon rating: 4.7 stars – 15,359 reviews Worth knowing: Works best on smooth flat surfaces – suction can be inconsistent on textured shower floors. Check drain size and proximity to wall before ordering. My partner uses a similar one successfully as a bath plug replacement, though some report slow drainage in that use case.
2. Mosquito Dunks What it does: Biological larvicide that kills mosquito larvae in standing water without harming fish, birds, pets or beneficial insects. Why we recommend it: Summit is the established brand, widely used in public health programmes. One dunk treats a standard pond for around 30 days – replace more frequently in tropical heat and direct sunlight. Amazon rating: 4.5 stars – 27,275 reviews Worth knowing: Takes several days to work – that’s the biology, not a flaw. Replace more frequently than the stated 30 days in tropical heat and direct sunlight.
Attracting Predators
3. Bamboo Stakes What it does: Provides perching points for dragonflies to hunt from – place around the garden at dusk and watch them work. For a full dragonfly strategy, our guide on creating a dragonfly-friendly garden is coming soon. Why we recommend it: Any garden stake does the job but bamboo is the most natural option and dragonflies seem to prefer it. Six feet is the ideal height for hunting perches. Amazon rating: 4.6 stars – 15,602 reviews Worth knowing: These are lightweight rather than heavy-duty – some reviewers find them thin for plant support. For dragonfly perches that’s completely irrelevant… If your dragonflies get too fat off mosquitoes, a new set of stakes seems a fair trade
Physical Barriers:
4. Magnetic Screen Door What it does: Hands-free mesh barrier for doorways that seals magnetically, keeping mosquitoes out while allowing free movement in and out. Why we recommend it: A practical compromise where fixed mesh screens aren’t installed. Fits most standard door frames and requires no tools to install. Amazon rating: 4.5 stars – 86,337 reviews Worth knowing: Measure your door opening carefully before ordering – fit is critical. If you have pets, opt for a heavier mesh weight as lighter mesh can tear with enthusiastic animals. The adhesive velcro can remove paint when repositioning so plan your placement carefully before sticking.
5.Permethrin Clothing Spray What it does: Sprayed onto clothing and gear, repels and kills mosquitoes on contact with treated fabric. Bonds to fabric for up to 6 weeks through multiple washes. Why we recommend it: Sawyer is the established brand, widely trusted for outdoor and travel use. Particularly effective for dawn and dusk outdoor activities where other methods aren’t practical. Amazon rating: 4.6 stars – 46,250 reviews Worth knowing: Strong odour when wet – allow to dry fully before wearing. The spray nozzle has mixed reviews; if yours arrives faulty, decanting into a standard spray bottle works fine. Important: toxic to cats – keep away from pets until completely dry.
Repellents and Deterrents
6. Citronella Incense Sticks What it does: Smouldering sticks that produce mosquito-deterring smoke for outdoor use. Light 10 minutes before sitting outside and position upwind. Why we recommend it: Effective, natural, and inexpensive. The smoke does the work rather than the specific fragrance – citronella and lemongrass varieties perform well in testing. Amazon rating: 4.5 stars – 2,974 reviews Worth knowing: Burn time can be shorter than advertised in windy conditions – using 2-3 sticks together and positioning upwind compensates for this.
7. Mosquito Coils What it does: Same principle as incense sticks but longer burning. Each coil burns for 5-7 hours making them better suited for longer outdoor sessions. Why we recommend it: Personal preference between sticks and coils – both work on the same smoke principle. Coils burn longer, sticks are easier to handle and position. Amazon rating: 4.5 stars – 1,559 reviews Worth knowing: Coils are fragile by nature – separate carefully when unwrapping. Bring inside when not in use to extend lifespan.
8. Mosquito Coil Holder What it does: Safe, contained holder for burning coils – keeps ash contained and hot coils away from surfaces and children. Why we recommend it: A proper holder is worth having – burning coils directly on surfaces is a fire risk and wastes smoke dispersal. Amazon rating: 4.4 stars – 4,553 reviews Worth knowing: Iron construction can rust if left outside permanently in humid conditions – bring inside when not in use.
Bite Relief
9. Cetirizine Antihistamine (Non-Drowsy) What it does: Oral antihistamine that reduces allergic reaction to mosquito bites – itching, swelling and discomfort. Non-drowsy formula suitable for daytime use. Why we recommend it: Cetirizine is widely recommended by doctors for mosquito bite reactions. The Amazon Basic Care version is the same active ingredient as branded alternatives at a fraction of the price. Amazon rating: 4.7 stars – 68,754 reviews Worth knowing: For nighttime use when drowsiness is less of a concern, see Benadryl below – it works faster for some people and the drowsiness can actually help with sleep disrupted by itching.
10. Benadryl Antihistamine (Drowsy) What it does: Oral antihistamine for significant bite reactions – particularly useful at night when drowsiness is a bonus rather than a problem. Why we recommend it: Diphenhydramine works quickly for acute reactions and the sedative effect helps when bites are disrupting sleep. Amazon rating: 4.7 stars – 4892 reviews. Worth knowing: Not suitable for daytime use if you need to drive or operate machinery. For daytime relief use cetirizine above instead.
Honest Passes
Bat houses We looked at several bat house options for mosquito control – bats are genuinely excellent at night-time mosquito hunting. However most products on Amazon are designed for temperate climates where darker boxes absorb heat. In Thailand’s humidity and heat, these would likely be unsuitable for the bats wellbeing and deteriorate more quickly. Worth sourcing locally with tropical climate guidance. Note: bats in Thailand can carry rabies – never handle them directly.
Thermacell devices Effective for some users but after reviewing the full product range we found inconsistent effectiveness reports and expensive ongoing refill costs across every model. We couldn’t confidently recommend a specific product. May be worth trying locally where you can return it easily.
Mosquito bats The best quality bats seem to be Asian market products not well represented on Amazon US. We use one sourced locally from Lotus in Hua Hin (Batty, the one I am currently wielding is the strangely named Mosquito MaxSave) – ask for a rechargeable model with a large head. We’ll link one here when we find an Amazon equivalent we’re confident in.
Bug zappers with UV light Evidence doesn’t support the claim that UV light attracts mosquitoes specifically – they’re primarily drawn to CO2 and body heat. Zappers mostly catch moths and beneficial insects instead.
Solar pumps Still searching for a reliable model – will update when we find one worth recommending.
